Nebraska Department of Correctional Services 2008 Award Recipients
Director Robert Houston proudly announces the Agency’s 2008 Annual Award Recipients. These awards include employee and supervisor/manager of the year. Recipients for these two categories, if indicated with an asterisk (*), have also been submitted as the DCS nominees for Employee and Supervisor/Manager of the Year for the Governor’s Recognition Program.

“Above and Beyond Awards” are given for recognition of personnel going above and beyond normal duties on and off the worksite. The 2008 recipients of the Department’s “Above and Beyond Awards” are named below.
2008 Leadership Award: Jan Axdahl, Education Supervisor, Nebraska Correctional Center for Women The Leadership Award is given for demonstrating leadership ability; displaying visionary leadership and leadership traits appropriate to the situation; promoting harmony and teamwork; inspiring confidence and respect; embodying the Department’s goal of “making a difference;” inspiring co-workers to become leaders; leading by example and displaying and encouraging ethical behavior in the work environment.
2008 Community Service Award: Abby Allen, Unit Case Manager, Omaha Correctional Center The Community Service Award is given to a staff member who is involved in community/non-profit organizations; works for community betterment and assists the community in times of crisis.
2008 In the Line of Duty Award: Ben Bakewell, Unit Caseworker, Lincoln Correctional Center and 10/20/07 LCC Emergency Responders: Heather Todd, Unit Caseworker; Ted Sheil, Officer; Adam Borer, Officer; and Francis Schrotberger, Acting Sergeant The In the Line of Duty Award is given to staff who demonstrate exceptional performance of duty above and beyond in life-threatening or dangerous situations, whether at work or in the community.
2008 Team Award – Community Corrections Center – Lincoln’s Employee Activity Committee Committee members: Helen Baker, Canteen Operator; Jeff Codr, Unit Caseworker; Ellen Fochtman, Corporal; Candace Hanes, Corporal; Larinda Parker, Corporal; James Serie, Corporal; Kathy Shada-Marsh, Chemical Dependency Counselor (former); Rex Richard, Warden; Pam Prater, Administrative Assistant II The Team Award is given to staff who support an environment where members are valued, respected, and encouraged to look for an implement solutions; encourage differences in thought and opinion as this adds value to the end product; works for the betterment of the group rather than for personal gain; recognizes the importance of their responsibilities and roles in fulfilling the NDCS mission; and supports information sharing and knowledge transfer in order to improve employee involvement and improve quality.
2008 PAT Award – TSCI Blue Ribbon Panel Blue Ribbon Panel members: Robert P. Houston, Director, NDCS Central Office; Frank Hopkins, Deputy Director, NDCS Central Office;Marian Layman, Human Resources Administrator, NDCS Central Office; Fred Britten, Warden, TSCI; Brian Gage, Deputy Warden, TSCI; Dominic Witherspoon, Associate Warden, TSCI; Dawn-Renee Smith, Administrative Assistant III, TSCI; Mark Lowe, Corporal, TSCI; Mike McCrory, Director, State Personnel; Dovi Mueller, Personnel Program Administrator, State Personnel; Bill Wood, Chief Negotiator, Employee Relations; John Munn, Director, Banking and Finance The PAT Award is given to staff who demonstrate continuous quality improvement principles by exchanging ideas openly, listening to each other, working towards a common goal and challenging one another to come up with new ideas; demonstrates CQI principles by continuously finding ways to do things better (improving work process within the organization; and as a result of the PAT’s efforts, the final product is improving services to customers, conforming to or exceeding the customer’s requirements.
2008 Outstanding Ambassador: Jill Dodds, Unit Case Manager, Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility The Outstanding Ambassador Award is given to staff who exhibit exemplary performance, participates in a least one recruiting event in the past year; recruits at least one employee in the past year; is involved in community or non-profit organizations; has actively participated in the Department’s quality initiatives by serving on PAT’s teams, work groups, EAC, QC, or visioning; leads by example; displays and encourages ethical behavior in the work environment and within the community; demonstrates respect and dignity in the treatment of all—inmates, coworkers, visitors to the institutions, and fellow citizens in the community; and enhances the creditability of the Department internally and externally.
2008 Field Training Officer (FTO) Award: Jane Dani, Officer, Diagnostic and Evaluation Center The Field Training Officer Award is given to staff that maintains a positive relationship with the trainee; acts as both an instructor and a mentor; has an in-depth understanding of the specific tasks being taught; communicates effectively; evaluates trainee performance objectively; exhibits exemplary performance; treats the public, inmates and co-workers with fairness, courtesy and respect; supports the Department’s vision points; and embodies the department’s goal of “making a difference.”
2008 Partnership Award – Oracle Sales & Manufacturing Implementation Team Team members include: Cornhusker State Industries, DCS Accounting, DCS Purchasing, DCS Information Systems, Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Nebraska Information System (NIS) and Consultants Devin Wight, Ram Movva, and Janet Craft The Partnership Award is given to an external entity that adheres to the policies and/or procedures of DCS Guidelines
